A country of contrasts, there’s a huge area of Romania that is sparsely populated thanks to the rocky terrain of the Carpathian Mountains and the surrounding forests. Meanwhile, the bustling city of Bucharest is a hive of energy and lots of fun. The centre may be contemporary, but explore hidden corners and you’ll be rewarded with unexpected art nouveau villas and pretty orthodox churches.
The landscape is dotted with stone monasteries and Transylvania boasts a glut of atmospheric gothic castles perched on dramatic rocky outcrops. Bran Castle is of course linked to Bram Stoker’s fictional Count Dracula but there are plenty of others to admire and explore. Wander through the cobbled streets in the medieval towns and sample the many cafes and bars or immerse yourself in tradition by visiting the folk museums.
To the South, Europe’s second longest river, the Danube, has a delta that provides a home for hundreds of species of birds and fish. Fishing, boating and bird-watching are all popular pastimes and there are endless opportunities for walking across all terrains.
In Summer the beach resorts attract swimmers, sun worshippers and party-goers. Peace seekers need not apply.
